In a recent article responding to research by Barclays bank, it was reported that the UK’s logistics industry has fallen “significantly” over the past year. Rob Riddleston of Barclays said: “Confidence in the UK logistics industry has taken a knock from price pressure and increasing competition.”*

At NGC we pride ourselves on efficiency and going the extra mile for our customers. And whilst we can’t argue that there are pressures being placed on the industry, the uncertainty of the EU, pricing and the ability to attract skilled drivers we don’t feel that it’s all doom and gloom.

In fact quite the opposite and as a high growth logistics company, we have cemented our business operations to weather any storm.

We know that operating efficiently, saving on costs including energy and working to a sustainable business model are key factors in contributing to our success and a sustainable business. That being said, efficiency in logistics is vital and that encompasses using technology to enable our business.

It’s time to go back to basics

When looking at a new distribution centre or implementing new logistics activities, we have to consider whether that cost will add value to the supply chain. At NGC we look at ways of consolidating orders, reducing transportation costs, route optimisation and overall efficiency.

Our optimisation strategies have become a key component and competitive advantage. This has helped us win business with Amazon as we are quick to respond and enable quick deliveries, we’re flexible and know the importance of brand.

Providing the right product, at the right place and in the right time frame with minimal damages and returns at a competitive cost is a balancing act. One that we have crafted to suit our clients’ individual requirements. To achieve this at NGC Logistics we measure everything, performance measures are down to the minute. It’s also what we do with that information that counts. Our management team, including people who have worked in every part of the business implement training, continuous improvement programs to hone operations and increase customer service at every opportunity.

Training is core part of the NGC Logistics business. Drivers are trained in our methodologies that have been devised specifically for this fast paced industry. From grass roots we’re instilling standards and promote a culture of taking responsibility, encouraging suggestions for improvements no matter how big or small and going the extra mile.

As we look to the future, with the basics firmly in place, optimisation strategies that are relevant and continuous improvement we are optimistic about NGC and the UK’s logistics industry. With the right foundations in place there is scope for us to continue our high growth rate and ambitions of becoming the UK’s leading logistics provider.
